Charles O. Witte consular papers, 1845-1881.

Documents include two certificates dated [1845], one of which bears a royal Hanoverian seal and concerns Charles Otto Witte, giving his date of birth and possibly the name of his parents; a letter (1865) to Witte from U.S. Acting Secretary of State William Hunter transmitting an act recognizing Witte as the consul of Hamburg at Charleston (S.C.); a travel pass (text and date in German) issued at Hamburg; a document (1871) appointing Witte as consul of the German Empire at Charleston, signed by President Ulysses S. Grant; and a document (1881) appointing Witte as vice-consul of Austria-Hungary at Charleston, signed by President James A. Garfield.
